THE HISTORY OF KETAMINE...

Medical Beginnings (1960s–1980s)

Ketamine was originally derived from phencyclidine in the search for a safer anaesthetic with fewer side effects. it was first synthesized in 1962.

Patented in 1970 it was approved for use in humans by the U.S Food and Drug administration. Soon after, it was put to use to treat American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam war.

Recreational Use and Controls (1990s–2000s)

In the 1990s, ketamine started being used as a party drug in the UK. People liked its strong, trance-like effects, but regular use caused serious health problems.. In response, the UK made it a Class C drug in 2006 to control its misuse.

Ketamine Being Used in The Modern Day (2010s–Today)

By the 2010s, because of ongoing misuse, it was reclassified as a Class B drug in 2014. With usage and death tolls rising every year, talks are to begin to reclassify ketamine as class A.
